Staying at a Motel

The term motel came into general use in the 1950s and was coined from a combination of the words motor and hotel. It is an establishment which provides both accommodation and parking and is intended to provide short term lodging for motorists. The rooms are often connected and in a U or L shape with direct access to the parking area.
Motels came into being in the United States of America as a result of the building of interstate highways. As most accommodation such as hotels were located in the cities motorists were forced to travel to the next city or State before they could find somwhere to stay overnight. Very conveniently for motorists motels began to spring up in towns and suburbs.
Motels are targeted at travellers and provide shelter overnight unlike hotels. Although the quality of the rooms is high and they are often serviced they still tend to be cheaper than hotels. They will have at least tea and coffee making facilities and often have a self contained kitchen. This can be a great saving as you won’t need to eat out all the time.
It is normal for the units to have entrances directly accessing the car park area. It is both convenient for packing and unpacking luggage and secure to be able to park your car directly in front of your motel unit.
It would be a rare hotel which did not have a dining room and serve meals. Most motels do not offer this facility which allows them to offer cheaper rates. You are not expected to pay for a service thay you are unlikely to use.
The type of rooms offered by motels are studio, one, two or three bedroom units. Bathrooms are always included in the units to enhance privacy. Bedding and towels are catered.
Although the original concept was for overnight stays they can be a very comfortable option for a longer holiday and can feel like a home away from home and a base from which to explore your destination.
