The Southernmost city in New Zealand is Invercargill. Its name is derived from that of the prominent Otago Settler, William Cargill. It services the productive farming community on the plains of Southland. Its friendly sedate atmosphere coupled with the wide streets and many heritage buildings allow visitors to feel as if they are in a time warp and are transported back a few decades.
Native Southlanders are easy to pick. They are extremely friendly and hospitable and they talk with a rolling r which harks back to their Scottish ancestry.
Invercargill is easy to reach along State Highway 1 and is about 2.5 hours South of Dunedin. It is close to the tourist destinations of Te Anau, Queenstown and the Catlins. There are frequent flights to the major cities and the airport is conveniently located just 3km out of town. The view of the Southern Alps from the turbocraft aeroplanes is spectacular. Buses operate between Invercargill and Dunedin, Christchurch and Queenstown.
You will find the centre of the city between Leven, Tay, Gala and Daveron streets and many businesses near Kelvin and Esk streets. Interestingly many of the streets reflect the heritage of the early settlers and are named after Scottish and English rivers.
The lovely Queen's Park is found near the Centre of town. The park is 81 hectares in size and boasts a variety of sights and activities. It is home to Queen’s golf club, the Observatory, the Southland Museum and Art Gallery and even a zoo. At the Edwardian styled park you will enjoy seeing ponds and formal gardens and the children will be able to play on an excellent playground.
Bluff is worth a visit. It is the southernmost town on the South Island. From here you can take the ferry to the beautiful and wild Stewart Island. From here you can visit the native bird sanctuary on Ulva Island. From Bluff you can also visit the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter and go on one of their frequent tours. Visitors are advised that the strong magnetic fields in the plant can affect electronic equipment and they should leave watches, cell phones and games in a safe place.
